‘Stal Barbazan’ stables, Mormont, Ardennes (Belgium)

The farm
The farm is located in the Ardennes, one of the most beautiful areas of Belgium. This area is also known as the ‘gateway to the high Ardennes’. The hilly landscape of the ‘Ourthe’ and ‘Aisne’ valley, is defined by extensive forested areas; a wide range of wildlife and an unspoilt landscape. It’s not by accident that this area is known as ‘Europe’s lungs’.

The land is approximately 8 hectares with the River L’Amante flowing through it. The farm has several natural springs where deer, badgers, beavers and many other animals gather to drink. Stal Barbazan is located in the village of Mormont which is part of the Erezée community. About 100 families live here, most of whom are farmers. Stal Barbazan used to be of great historical importance to the village of Mormont. The building dates back to1941 and has always been the hunting house for the Wallonian upper class. Barbazan House played an important role during the Second World War, giving shelter to many Allied soldiers and pilots with it’s numerous safe areas in the attic and secret cellars.

The farming at Stal Barbazan
This is not a traditional working farm but completely aimed at horses. People bring their horses here for many reasons: turning the horses out to grass in their retirement; breaking them in; schooling them for competitions.
If you like, you can also bring your own horse and explore the beautiful countryside on horseback. If you are an inexperienced rider and you wish to learn more, you can take riding lessons here during your stay.

During the seasons you will also find lambs, sheep, chickens, not to mention the extensive wildlife you’ll spot in the countryside. Currently there’s a family of beavers living by the river and if you’re lucky, you may even spot one!
