The dairy farm on the Volenbeek Estate in Ermelo, the Netherlands
The farm and its location
The farm dates from 1859 and the first of four Wouter Rozendaals started farming here in 1905. This stunning private estate lies in the middle of the Veluwe National Park, a magnificent woodland area. To get there, you will need to leave the main road and travel on a dirt track into the heart of the woods. As is common in this area of the Netherlands, the estate is named after a small stream (the Dutch beek) which flows through the area.
The Farm
The farm is home to a 50 dairy cow herd and Wouter is also responsible for the upkeep of the estate. There are many small farm animals in the separate shed, where children can spend hours getting to know the farm animals, and of course look for fresh eggs.
Your hosts
Wouter and Thea Rozendaal and their three children will do everything possible to make your stay an enjoyable one.
Pets welcome
Pets are permitted, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
The surrounding area
One side of the estate is bordered by the extensive Veluwe countryside; the other by the old fishing villages which used to lie on the Zuiderzee coast before the Zuiderzee was closed by a dyke to create an inland lake, now used for recration and watersports. The farm is nestled in the vast woodland between Ermelo and Putten and the woods surrounding the property provide
excellent walking and cycling. In addition, the charming fishing towns of Harderwijk and Elburg are only a short distance away. A quick cycle will take you to a heated swimming pool and in the summer months you can cycle to the beaches of the inland lake.
The location of the tents
The tents are situated in a large field on the edge of the woods. There are good facilities for children.
Unique to the farm
Because the farm is surrounded by such beautiful woods, children are actively encourage to go out and build dens or huts from fallen trees and branches.
Besides ordinary (childrens)bikes you can also hire tandem bikes and bikes with a trailer. Holland is, afterall, a bicycle mad country.
Walking distance from your tent, you will find a complete indoor play-area in a rebuilt stable, a great activity on a rainy day. The farm has a new "shower-stable" with a separate baby and children area.
