Melkveebedrijf Hoeve de Pippert, Ophemert (Gld)

Dairy farm De Pippert in Ophemert, the Netherlands

The farm and its location
There is mention of the ‘De Pippert’ name in documents dating from c.1500, but the current farm building dates from 1845 and is situated directly opposite Ophemert Castle. The lanes and footpaths in the vicinity of the castle are well worth discovering and the neighbouring Mariabos, a large area of woodland, is an excellent place for children to play or build dens.

The farm lies in the heart of the Betuwe district, Hollands’ largest fruit producing area. One of the main waterways of the region, the river Waal, is only a short walk away. The Waal river nature reserve provides some excellent walking.

The Farming at "De Pippert farm"
The "de Pippert" dairy farm is in many respects a model of its kind, using the latest and most modern farming methods while refusing to compromise its old-fashioned farming values. The farm has 140 hectares of land, 180 cows and approximately 130 calves. Cows are milked using Dutch-made fully automated milking facilities.

Your Hosts
Cor Kranendonk and his wife Anja live on the "de Pippert" farm together with their six children Janneke (23), Evert (22), Neeltje (20), Nico (17), Daniel (14) and Annamarie (11).

Pets allowed
Pets are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times.

The surrounding area
The farm lies on ancient land opposite castle Ophemert in the river landscape of the Betuwe. This is a beautiful part of the country brimming with culture, picturesque villages and pretty hamlets. The Betuwe is the main fruit producing are of the Netherlands and the fruit capitals of Geldermalsen and Tiel are a short distance away. The historic town of Buren, a short cycle away from the farm, is also worth a visit: William of Orange married Anna van Buren here and the current Queen Beatrix still holds the title of Countess van Buren. You can hire a canoe from the farm for a trip on the (small) ancient river Linge.

The location of the tents
The tents lie in beautiful surroundings with stunning views overthe fields. There are good playing facilities for children and there is a large and well-stocked animal paddockwhere children and adults can get close to the animals.

Unique to the Pippert
There are chickens everywhere at de Pippert , so rather than looking in the purpose-built coop you can have great fun searching for eggs in every nook and cranny on the farm. Children will spend hours in the hay barn where a trampoline and swing ropes are in between bales of hay.
