Melkveehouderij Het Wesselink, Schalkhaar (Ov)

Dairy farm ‘t Wesselink in Schalkhaar, the Netherlands

The farm and its location
‘T Wesselink farm has a long history. One of the supporting beams on the farm dates from 1623 and the building itself is mentioned in a well-known ancient Dutch text describing the area. The farm lies in close proximity to ancient woodland with an excellent network of paths for walking and cycling, all under the management of the St. IJssellandschap organization which oversees roughly 4000 hectares of woodland, cultural heritage and areas of outstanding natural beauty. The farms in this area are easily recognized by their colourful green, yellow and red shutters. Situated between the towns of Raalte and Deventer, the Sallandse Heuvelrug national park is close by, as is the Overijssel canal. This is a peaceful and beautiful landscape where time seems to stand still.

The Farming
‘T Wesselink is a mixed farm with 40 hectares of land of which 20 are pasture supporting 60 dairy cows. Sugar beet, corn and potatoes are grown on the remaining land.

Your hosts
The Smale family have been farming here for three generations. Currently the farm is run by Henk and Margriet Swale, who have two daughters, Eline and Anne and a son: Tom.

Pets allowed
Pets are permitted, but must be kept on a lead at all times.

The surrounding area
The farm is situated between Raalte and the historic town of Deventer. The National Park "de Sallandse Heuvelrug" is nearby. In the direct vicinity of the farm you find a landscape where forests are seperated by grazing meadows and agricultural land. On the canal behind the farm, you can go for a tradional swim (no steps into the water, no changing rooms or other modern facilities). Just a dive from the edge into the canal. Of course, the canal is also a perfect place for canoeing and fishing. You can hire canoes and fishing rods from the farm.

The location of the tents
Arrive at this farm and you will feel that you have come to a previously undiscovered part of the Netherlands. The tents are situated on the edge of a private woodland with excellent scope for walking and great facilities for children to play in the woods. Children (and their mums and dads...) are always playing on the rope swings in the woods.

Unique to 't Wesselink farm
Henk and Margriet have made a cuddle-stable in which kids can cuddle with rabbits and guinea-pigs. You can take Bonnie (the pony) out on a walk and he loves being groomed and cuddled too.
